Will we have a depression
?
I refuse to get depressed.
There's always a road to success with enough determination.
What's your big dream & how are you going to get there?

Nov 04, OBAMA WINS!
Will I become a successful artist --
Am I successful now?
You're successful if what you are doing makes you happy and makes a "positive impact on others", which is a good definition of art. The trick is to know yourself well & without illusions & delusions, so you can assess your happiness well & that's your direction. You're doing fine!

There's a class of new drug, statins, that probably everyone over 40 should be taking to lower cholesterol. Ask your doctor about it. Here's a card that inspired me to mention that. :)

Nothing is as simple as it seems at first. Every answer begs a deeper question: another opportunity to say 'yes, but why?' or 'yes, but how?'
Even when the question is so familiar that everyone knows the answer, some disagree on how to apply the answer, while most don't even know where to start.
What is the best way to loose weight and lower my cholesterol?
Make a list of reasons to lose weight on a small card & carry it in your pocket or wallet.
Weigh yourself every day, and chart it. Be creative & find healthy alternative foods and don't buy anything but that.
Eat at home only & never go out.
Believe in yourself and distract yourself in healthy ways if you feel down & want to binge eat.

Happy Thanksgiving! :)

I'm an investment banker and my job sucks but don't know what I want to do anyways. What should I do?
Make a list of all the projects, jobs, and hobbies you've had in your life & note which really inspired you. See any trends?
Develop some ideas & take them to other people who've made various career choices. Be creative -- can you transform your current job or turn your dream job into reality?

Because of the bad weather, I'm starting to see a slowdown in people coming to the garden. I haven't yet decided if I want to keep the place open all winter. We'll see!

What should I do if I want the kids at school to stop making fun of me?
Kids won't pick on you if it's no fun & it's not making you sad. You can say "Boy, you must have a weak ego if you need to pick on people!" or just don't give them any sign.
Be strong -- people who seem to have confidence are usually making part or all of it up.
You make it up too & they won't be able to tell.

I'm writing a grant proposal to fund making a bigger installation of The Abyss. I'm seeking a place to put it in Spring 2009: a public park, a corporate park, school grounds. Any suggestions? Anyone have an uncle or aunt who's a park manager? The website is http://wheelquestions.org/nextproject.html
I get a lot of cards about the Abyss, asking who I am and what it is. Here's one.

how did you make this?
I had an idea and I turned it into a project and I did it.
What ideas do you have and how can you get going on them?

Today is a special day for me. It's the anniversary of my finding true happiness. :)

How can I tell if I'm coming off as clingy an annoying to my friends?
You can tell if you are reaching out to them about the same that they are reaching out to you.
If you're overdoing it, try to spread your enthusiasm across more friends or take up a hobby.
If you have "friends" who simply aren't very giving, don't let that get to your self-image. You're doing just fine, it's just some people aren't very giving. Let those go.

I met someone in Boston this week seeking advice about my garden. I started to explain it, but she had already seen it! I guess word is getting out there, that's awesome.
I never know what to say when people have "prediction" questions. Rather than saying I don't know; I like to throw out possibilities that make you think or laugh. Here's one.

Oracle, what kind of baby is Claire going to have?
A future rock star who will date Lindsay Lohan and star in a B-grade film, go into rehab but survive and dedicate the rest of life to charity work & save lives in Africa.

My roommate saw a couple making out in the shrine yesterday. So now it's been christened. Why didn't I think of that? :)

When will I have peace of mind fully?
Within 2 months, but you have to make it happen. Make a list of the relationships & responsibilities & habits in your life and what's genuinely making you happy.
No "love is blind" idealism please or misplaced sense of obligation when you aren't getting something back. Back way from the bad. You can do it!

Here's one in the holiday spirit. Don't allow unreasonable "family expectations" or a sense that the holidays are invalid if they aren't a huge production drive you into a frenzy.

Should I have Thanksgiving and or Christmas at my house again, for my family?
Think, "does it really make me happy?" and "am I doing my fair share of giving in the family?", and that will help you decide. If you think it's the right thing but too draining, look for ways to simplify. Get food made by a caterer or sign up family volunteers as a condition of your hosting.
Don't forget to love yourself.

How long should I be patient to let "time do its thing" in terms of my parents understanding that my way of life is not how they pictured it?
Waiting is rarely an efficienit way to fix something. It's time to set some boundaries & tell them that if they want a close relationship with you, you need them to respect your different goals. Downplay the conflict & never rise to the temptation to bark -- it just gives them "proof" to judge you on. Try humor instead.

I'm trying to apply for an arts grant to create an Abyss site somewhere public, like Boston Common, or a mall, or school grounds, or a museum. Would someone who knows anything about that get in touch? I'm at johnny@wheelquestions.org
When people say they "know" the answer about God, that sounds like hubris to me. How can anybody really say they know anything about the unknowable? I have a lot of feelings... like the feeling I should eat all the ice cream I can see. Since when does my feeling about God have anything to do with the truth? Who made me the expert? Or you? Here's a card about that.

At what point in human history did it cease to be common for a rational adult to believe in monsters?
Since 68% of Americans believe that Satan is real, I guess not yet.
There's a great deal of confusion with religious believers between what we want to be true & what we "feel" or wish to be true. My heart's led me astray in love too many times to trust it on God.

Did you know that child labor laws don't apply if your family runs a restaurant? Wild. I bet it applies to farms and other businesses, too.

I am in a family run business that is on the brink of closing.
Should I hang in there and try to get them through, or should I bail out & find something new?
-N
Make a list of the pros & cons, and watch out for mysterious infinite "family obligations". To get out of such, get a friend & measure what's really appropriate and don't be guilted into more. People in your family, if they love you, should respect your needs too. Don't jump ship until you have a new job & don't stay if you can't survive financially.

What really matters in life?
- Find a friend who needs help but is too shy to ask. Offer.
- Be honest to a fault. With diplomacy you never need to tell a white lie or avoid someone's calls.
- Love yourself enough to say no to others when they're not good to you.
- Understand yourself & what really makes you happy.
- Always say YES to life's adventures!

Did you know that there are fewer wars worldwide than at any time in history? People often have a feeling that things are getting worse. This feeling is ill-informed. Educate yourself and be happy. Life is good.

Do you find it difficult to be proud of, and remain optimistic of, modern day America?
Mozart lived to 35 and died of illness at a time when life was short.
You'll probably live to 100 given advances in technology, and trends in social & political freedoms & fewer wars & poverty & death worldwide are just getting better.
What kind of delusion are you in, questioning optimism? Even if we hit a depression it's still the best life ever, ever.

In times of hardship one sometimes feels the need to give up. Is it better to fight through these hard times, or would it be a better solution to just give up and try again?
Knowing when to cut your losses is the #1 most difficult thing in life. The only way to find out is to use your head, not your heart. Make a list of all the pros & cons and think clearly without illusions. Make a plan. Are you really trying hard enough or smart enough?
Keep a diary & track your progress & happiness 1-10. Is what you're trying working?
Is giving up going to make you happier?

Here's a card about focusing your energy and making time for what you really want! I'm going to an artists convention today, my first. What's my artistic medium, paper and people? :)

Will I reach my artistic potential if I can only work on my craft on weekends?
Oh, but you can daydream & plan it all the time.
And you can bring in a friend or a contractor for the pieces you don't absolutely need to own.
And you can network and apply for grants or think smart about making some money so you can work 3 or 4 days on your art.
Simplify your life & use that energy on your passions!

What we believe intellectually and we feel emotionally can fight each other. Sitting on the sofa, of course you don't have any energy. It's the sitting itself that drains you. If you can believe that getting up for a few minutes will make you feel better, then do it -- and you'll be glad you did just a few minutes later. :)
Here's a card about that.

Lately, I've felt like a mournful old spirit trapped inside a supple young body (no sex, hardly any laughter, etc.). What will it take for me to feel young again?
Hobby clubs are full of zealous people whose passion is infectious.
Join one or start one! The trick is believing that if you give it a week you'll be glad you did.
Just sitting waiting for inspiration won't work. Get out there & you'll soon feel more energetic. As for romance, go online or network through friends.
Try exercising, & smile more -- that's beauty!

How can I figure out the risk that is right for me to take right now career-wise and art wise? I have ideas and passion but fear about money keeps me from acting. I feel stuck between being unable to financially survive if I do what I love or being miserably depressed in an unfulfilling office job for the rest of my life. I WANT TO MAKE ART!!
There are so many luxuries to modern life: cars, TV, the Internet, healthcare... You can live like a 15th century King on so little money.
You have to follow your passion. It's what makes you you. It's why it matters that you & not somebody else is living your life. Think creatively!
There must be a way to earn a living.
Network & learn from the examples of others & don't give up! You can do it!

"Who Am I?" is really a way of saying, "Am I ordinary? What do I want in life?" and these are confusing questions! It's a myth that when you turn 21 it suddenly becomes clear. The good news is that you're already unique. You're just not paying attention. :)

Who am I?
:-/
Imagine a famous actor is doing a character study to portray you in a movie. How do you talk? Do you have common habits? How do you treat people? Make a big list and ask friends for help. Then make a list of who you want to be. It's OK to change your mind on this! Who inspires you & what hobbies or projects have you enjoyed? Meet people who were once like you & made various life choices. Ask questions!

When will I meet the man of my dreams?
Not until you know yourself & what really makes you happy & have the courage to say "no" to the wrong guys. Work on reducing the baggage in your life -- it builds confidence & that's attractive. Have 1 date a week & hang in there! It takes work but you can do it!

Is it possible for love to triumph over fear, mistrust, the sinking feeling reconciliation is / might be a big mistake?
Nope.
Look, love is a kind of "Go!" signal put out by your gut, which is not very bright and your heart can easily mislead you, especially if you are off-balance in life & don't have confidence in who you are & what really makes you happy. Use your head & say no to a love that already failed.

How do you tell someone you love them, when you feel the response will be the most important answer you ever hear?
How do you know the timing is right?
Be a good listener & you'll hear them say things like "I've always wanted to" or "I really need to get..." and make a surprise & get them what they want.
Start talking about "caring" for them & see where it goes. Be strong & don't go faster than they want to. If they've dated you for 3 months they should have an answer.n
That's enough time to fall in love.

I get so many good cards, more than one a day, that we are slowly sliding into the past with this blog. Here's a pic of me painting the new roof on the shrine.

Who is a true friend
?
And how does one become a true friend
?
A true friend calls you or emails just to say hi.
Is willing to listen & give you advice, even if it challenges you.
Supports & believes in you, and never causes drama by complaining or lashing out in frustration.
Doesn't take you for granted or get too "needy" or clingy. Only centered, happy, confident people can be truly good to you.

I know now that it's possible to have a romance in three minutes, start to end. I wonder who she was. <3
Congratulations to everyone on making it through the election. If Obama makes good on his promise to work with everyone, then we're all winners.

Will I be a good mother, wife and career woman all at the same time?
Yes, because you're smart enough to look underneath your surface goals to find your deeper goals. What do you really need to be happy?
Find synergies so you can get what you want & don't forget to love yourself & get "me time". Don't give in to phony goals like "I must work full time to have a career" or "only I can babysit".

Yet more of the new tree, in an attempt to make this blog warm and homey for ya.

How do I become more assertive? I feel as though I have difficulty expressing my opinion at times.
It's like dieting, you gain confidence & assertiveness a little at a time. Back away from friend / family / work relationships that tear you down.
Experiment with saying "no" & don't gauge success on how you feel with your heart but with your head. A few times of saying "no" with good results and your heart will fear less.

More on the new tree being planted.

How do I know who likes me for who I am?
Someone who accepts you for who you are doesn't try to change you. Can resolve problems with a friendly tone of voice.
Tells their friends how great you are.
Someone passive-aggressive might hide their true feelings, but if you seek out confident people who are happy in life for friendship, they won't do that.

Another pic of the new tree being planted.

How do we accept life as it is in any moment?
Some moments are much easier than others
Take a small card & write 10 things that make you happy. Carry that around in your wallet.
It will remind you when you're having a bad day that you're having a great life, and you have so much power to change it for the better.
Make some plans -- you will feel empowered & more hopeful.

More pics of the new tree, and another whimsical card.

Do I part my hair - what is left of it - behind? Do I dare to eat a peach?
Should I dare disturb the Universe?
And, also, a mermaid is singing to me, and I am afraid of it: what should I do?
Try the polished bald look. Eat two peaches.
Your purpose in life is to disturb the Universe.
As for the mermaid: sing back.
