Is it OK to promise the same thing to yourself on New Year's Eve every year?
|
It's normal to want to change but be afraid to. Mark a day on your calendar -- within a month -- as "change day" and have a party with friends. Present to them a list of what you want to do & get practical about getting the support you need to stick it through. You can do it, don't be afraid! Just take the 1st step.

Here's a good card for New Years. And if you're curious where to go and what to do, check out my Blog on quirky Boston events.
I've been with him for four years. I know I could grow old with him but in these cynical times everything seems too good to be true.
|
Why are these times cynical?
Look it up on the Internet: we're at a record global low for poverty, disease, and number of wars. We're at a record high for longevity, income, and standard of living. Fear is always fear of the unknown. Make a list of what you really need in love and pros & cons about your mate. Should you be cynical, or not?

What have you learned about people, doing this?
|
- We don't show it on the outside, but everyone has a troubling problem or question.
- We have enormous control over our own lives. Making a change is possible; it just requires conquering our fear of failure.
- Most people love the concept, but don't offer to help.
- I like saying hi to strangers.

How can you be very convincive?
-Sammie Spux
|
The best way to be convincing is, first demonstrate emotional empathy. People like advice from someone who's "on their side". Then get their agreement that a problem exists -- don't hop directly into what the solution should be. Describe the problem from their viewpoint.
Give them a sense of urgency & lead them to a specific action they should do now.

Is there any way to fix bad luck?
-PAC
|
You can't control the entire world and bad things may happen. But there's no such thing as fate or having bad luck. Learn to control what you can. Be on the lookout for possible bad things you can avoid & possible good things you can take advantage of. The more self confidence you build & awareness of what makes you happy, the easier it gets.

I got what I wanted for Christmas! An article in the Boston Phoenix. Thanks, Santa! :)

She is the only one who comes close to understanding, but she doesn't. If I stay with her, I keep my only real friend. If I leave, I can be perfectly alone. What do I do?
|
You feel that you'll be alone, but just like your heart can mislead you in love, it can mislead you here, too. Use your head to overrule this "but I love her" excuse for inaction where you know you aren't really happy.
The reality is when you back away from draining relationships you gain confidence, love, happiness.

Merry Christmas, to those who celebrate. To those who don't, here's a card for you.

Dear Dude,
Thanks for all of your advise, I come here often. Is there such a thing as normal?
-- Skullz 'N' Skittlez
|
Everyone has this urge to fit in & be loved. But you don't need to be normal for that. And what's the point of being a clone of someone else's life? Celebrate your differences. My name is Johnny by the way, see CrossIntoTheAbyss.org

I'm madly in love with a person who does not speak the same language as I. We are from very different worlds. I speak to her in the few words that I know in her language.
I am very taken by her, and do not know what I should do next. Can you advisse?
|
Your heart is misleading you and what you've got there is desire, not love. It's not possible to love someone you can't communicate with. Try learning her language. Try also getting a reality check from a friend & don't go jumping at Ms. Wrong or how can you be free for Ms. Right?

How do you face your fear to let your wall down + let yourself be totally vulnerable + open to love?
|
Fear is always fear of the unknown. But you can tackle the unknown by learning & making a plan.
Make a plan for what you would do if love failed & you'll see the world doesn't actually end. Push away the relationships & "obligations" that drain you & work on confidence. That will give you the strength to view love without alarmist anxiety.

Do you believe in Thor, the ancient viking god? Probably not. So you know what it's like to be an atheist. Here's a card on that.

1. Do you believe in God?
2. How come you have all the answers?
|
We all don't believe in the gods of others. It's just your god you're stuck on.
Does it matter to you that what you believe should be true? Then don't believe in something that's unproveable and billions of people can't agree on. It's time to face the fact that ancient texts were written by people in the bronze age who just didn't know that much. Since when is "feeling" that God exists enough, since hearts can mislead?

Sometimes if you don't know the next step, experiment! Here's a card on that.

I feel my destiny is to affect change on the world. However, I am not sure if the path I have chosen is the correct one.
Is it?
|
Make a plan for change. Is it practical? Find a way to measure the change you want to make.
Is it working? Stop using your gut for vital questions & use your head instead. You're nowhere near as lost as you think if you try.

Even though I'm expecting an article out in The Boston Phoenix, I've been getting fewer cards lately and can't keep The Wheel going through the bad weather. I have taken down all the cards except the last 7 days and may close it down until March. We'll see!

How can I use time more wisely and not waste it watching TV and using the computer?
Amber
|
Get a calendar and schedule your days. Make a big list of all the things you want to do and prioritize it. It's easy when you're idle in front of the TV to feel like you have no energy. But if you make yourself get up & do something for 20 minutes, that creates energy & you'll be glad you did.

I got my first blog comment this week! That's exciting!

How can I discover what my passion is?
I'm 55 and still don't know what I want to do to make a living.
|
It's normal to be confused on this! Make a list of all the projects, jobs, & hobbies you've had, and how much you've enjoyed them, in your whole life. You'll see some trends. Make a short list of 4 or 5 options & write down the pros && cons of what will really make you happy, without illusions. Talk with people who've made these choices already & get their advice. Then plan a "change day" party & get friends to come inspire you to get going!

It's easy around the holidays to feel that something magic is missing. The solution: don't take it lying down. Here's a card on that.

I feel so disconnected from life. I do participate (I have a fiancee, friends, family), but most of the tmie feel disconnected from the latter two, even tho there's no particular event to have caused the disconnect. I live in the city and am surrounded by people who appear to be fulfilled and having a great time, and yet I can't shake (and really have never been successful of shaking) a feeling of emptiness and lonliness.
How can I connect? How do I find kindred spirits (other than my fiancee?) - a community?
Thank you for setting this up.
It is wonderful! :)
|
Ask a professional if you have depression & don't be embarassed. It's quite common! Join hobby clubs around your area -- they are full of passionate people whose enthusiasm is infectious.
Never let yourself just sit & mope. Go out!

Is it really letting someone down if it saves them pain later?
|
If you have bad news for someone, it's always better just to tell them. If they're going to react constructively, then they can do so earlier. If they're not, why is that your fault or your problem? Don't let people guilt trip you into "obligations" that are giving more than you're getting.

Why is it so hard to slow down?
<3
|
You make "time to relax" a low priority and wait for "a rainy day". Put "me time" in your calendar and simplify your life by getting organized and dropping responsibilities that don't make you happy or are just so time consuming it makes you frantic. You can do it, you just need to acknowledge that peace as well as accomplishment is a goal for you.

The boy I like insulted me so badly that me might have scarred me for life. What should I do? Should I ignore him? He really hurt me.
Christina via Britannia
<3
|
You can only be hurt by something you believe. Use your head to veto your heart and talk yourself out of believing this terrible thing.
Or, if it's true, do what you can to change it -- if you want to -- and think, "So what, I'm working on it!" The best way to gain confidence is to push away the people who drain you. Tell the boy he's weak.

How can I ever afford to travel to the places I want to go?
|
Try couchsurfing.com which lets you crash on the sofa of respected & known people in a community.
Don't take on debt. It drains your ability to just drop out of life for a year and go backpacking. Most importantly: stop waiting.
Call a friend and meet this week to plan your first trip, even if it's nearby.

How do you deal with a negative person who needs to be taken care of but drains the life of me?
After being married for 48 years, I feel I need to see it thru (otherwise my children will feel the burden).
I also come from a generation of "guilty women" so my conscience roots me!
Woe is me...
|
Children feel the burden of an unhappy marriage, too. It sounds like an excuse to put off taking action. If you're unhappy, you owe it to yourself to take action. You could get a divorce, or form an "open relationship", or separate but stay married, or stay married but set firm limits even if that means he leaves you. Find a friend and make a plan. It reduces fear & inaction.

The new website is ready to go! You can see it at http://wheelquestions.org

How can we get ourselves to appreciate what we have instead of always wanting more?
|
Make a list of things you are grateful for, like instant coffee or national parks, modern dentistry or your friend who calls you.
Everything that makes you smile. Carry around a notebook and write more things as you think of them throughout your day. Look around & be more observant and your list will have 500 items!
When you're sad on one day, use it to know it's a great life!

Do we change in our sleep, and re-awake new?
|
Yes.
Every day you awake with new willpower, unless you are shortchanging yourself on a good night's rest. Forgive yourself the mistakes of the past and be smart about spending each day's willpower towards happiness & stability.

Since confidence is the largest part of beauty, I've read this question as meaning, "Do guys sometimes prefer to date less confident girls..."

Do guys sometimes prefer to date less-hott girls because it makes them more confident?
Yes. Some people -- men or women -- prefer to date & dominate someone who has a weak ego they can kick to feel powerful.
Don't be somebody's doormat.
You'll know it's real when you give but are given back to and are treated like the way you deserve, which is awesome of course! (If you didn't know that, now you do.)

Not all the cards I receive are deathly serious. Here's a fun one! From the way this asker has capitalized Grilled Cheese Sandwich but not taco, we can intuit whom he or she is rooting for!

Who would win in a fight?
A taco or a Grilled Cheese Sandwich?
A mild taco or spicy?
Swiss cheese or American?

A couple of months ago, somebody asked me when the first snowfall would be. I believe I said December 6! I can't find the card, though, in the online archives. Today it was snowing! I guess that just proves that good predictions happen by chance sometimes and we musn't attribute oracular powers to those who make lucky guesses.

why does it feel as though god has a vendetta against me and that I have bad luck?
How do I help myself to become less self conscious, especially in terms of finding a guy who will love me for me, and enough so that I wont need to seek a boy's love out?
The key is confidence.
Back away from relationships, obligations, and habits that drain you. Each liberating step you take, you will feel more energy & confidence. This allows you to extract yourself a little more & gives you the energy & knowledge of what genuinely makes you happy so you can say no to those who aren't good to you & be attractive to others.
Go on one date a week & keep at it!

I've decided to re-brand this website "Wheel Questions, Wheel Answers", based on the secular 'prayer wheel' in my garden that all the question cards get posted on. Today I am happily working on a new website.

Should I Quit my Job?
(I really don't like it)
Yes, you should spend as much time as you can in jobs, hobbies, & relationships that make you happy. But line up a new job before leaving, and if your real problem is elsewhere (depression, lack of attention to detail or discipline) maybe it's not the job that should change.
Maybe it's you.

The way cards are written are sometimes haunting. On this one, there's no question mark. It's easy to imagine someone who's just plain stuck.

Where do I go from here
Talk with a few people who have faced similar choices. Invite them to lunch for the chance to pick their brains. Develop a good sense of self & what really makes you happy, by using your head as well as your heart. Then make a pros & cons list of your options. Don't be afraid!
You can do it!

Sometimes friends can see things we ourselves are blind to. It's an important part of being a good friend to give negative, but supportive feedback, even it it's scary to do. This works for family, too. Here's how.

Should you give a friend advice that you know in your heart is right -- even if the repercussions could be severe? Is this the right & kind / loving thing to do even though you can't protect your friend from consequences...
If the good + long term benefits are best?
Sometimes you just can't help a friend if you don't have their attention & respect. Work on getting them to acknowledge the problem instead of blurting out a solution first.
Have your friend make a list of what's making them happy & what isn't.
If they're ok with a problem "for now" ask them to define how long doing nothing & hoping for the best should be tried.
Be courteous & you won't lose the friend.

How can I overcome my fear of taking the next big step toward my dreams & goals?
Mark a "Change Day" on your calendar & plan a party with friends. Make a plan & write it down.
It's always less scary when you can see the big picture. Although it may feel too draining to chase your goal, don't feel bad -- if it is a healthy goal that will make you happy, each step will add energy!

I like this guy, but I don't think he likes me the way I like him, how do I get him to ask me out
D.N. Angel 25
Ask a mutual friend to find out if he likes you. Or maybe he doesn't feel he knows you well enough yet. Why don't you ask him out? It's easy to do, especially if you are doing something fun with a group of friends & can invite him along. Try doing something nice for him like a small gift. Be brave. You can do it! :) <3 <3

If you make the decision to change yourself and behave differently, you become a new person. It's OK to dislike the old you while loving the new you. That's how to deal with regret.

Am I a good man?
Yes.
Forgive yourself your past & focus on being the best person you can be in the future. Just by asking, "am I a good person?" it shows you care and can act from that feeling. You're doing fine!
