July 2009 Archives

I get this one every week! There's not a whole lot of new ways to answer, though. Sometimes, I just write "boring!".

This weekend, Wheel Questions is going to the Newport Folk Festival! Come by and visit.

How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop?

A one...

A two...

A three...

CRUNCH!

Life is Grand!

Why are so many people unhappy?

Humans are very adaptable.

They can even get used to, & start taking for granted, clean water, modern medicine, democracy & freedom, first world prosperity, movies & TV, cars, air conditioning, electric lights, the Internet, social freedoms like anti-discrimination & child labor laws, free education, science & technology, and Dance Dance Revolution!!

Make your own list when you're down!

Will he move to Cali after I move first? Does he love me that much?

Negotiate it now, while the good will in your relationship is at its peak. Think creatively about synergies & opportunities for him if he moves -- positive reasons why it furthers his dreams. Offer him a creative exception or concession like finally allowing him to get that puppy you've been resisting. Above all, make a plan & think about happiness, not obligations.

How do I learn to love myself?

:)

Start by making a list of the things about yourself that you like in your head. It's hard to resist that.

Then back away from anyone in life (friends, lovers, family, co-workers) who's taking you for granted or constantly cuts you down to size.

Then get active in doing the fun projects & chasing your dream that you deserve. A positive spiral will emerge.

How can I most effectively make a lasting impression on humankind?

(Because I can't seem to figure it out on my own.)

When you read about people who've changed the world, they're doing something high leverage, that's needed, that others aren't doing. High leverage activities include founding an organization, taking research into production, politics, & writing a book. Get a friend & think over the change in the world you want but isn't happening. What's blocking change?

Can you make an end run around it in a way that inspires people to join you?

What allies can you attract? Who can you meet & learn from? You can do it!!

:)

Does everything really happen for a reason?

PS: this is the coolest thing ive ever seen :)

I'm sorry, but no.

It feels weird that the moon doesn't fall, because our feelings are an "inner chimp" that comes from our primate ancestors.

But feeling it doesn't make it true.

The moon doesn't fall. It's in orbit.

It also doesn't feel right that things don't happen for a reason.

So what? Who put our feelings in charge of the ultimate truth of reality?

One thing I left out of today's answer is that people who can't be polite in their criticism aren't usually seeing the issue straight. The more abusive the comment, the more likely they're simply wrong.

Should you care about what the world say or Thinks

:) .

You need the confidence to know when you're right despite all feedback, and the humility to know when you're wrong and to listen to feedback.

The way to tell is to ask, is what I'm doing working? Do I have a reason to believe it will? Is it a risk I can measure & monitor?

If you're right, ignore the naysayers!

:)

I found this one all torn up in the drop box.

How do you stay with someone you love

I'm sorry, but loving someone does not mean they will treat you well.

If your partner isn't good to you, you must leave even though you love.

You love yourself too much to not.

I've put up photos from the Somerville ArtBeat Festival on Saturday on the Wheel Questions Backstage Blog. I stood there for 10 hours and met hundreds of people!

When does life end

?

Every time relaxing becomes merely being idle,

Every time you do something wrong you regret deeply later,

Every time you're not brave enough to follow your dream, speak the truth, chase opportunity or flee trouble,

It's a little like death before your time.

Is there anybody going to listen to my story?

*YES*

Call the Samaritans, at their 24-hour hotline, at 877-870-HOPE.

They're friendly, I promise.

Tell them I said "hi".

I'll be at the Somerville ArtBeat festival Friday 7-10 and Saturday 12-6! That's in Davis Square, Somerville, where the Wheel currently is.

This is it. If someone with a van doesn't contact me, I cannot go to the New England Sand Sculpture Festival this Sunday. (My friend with a van is out of town.)

Here is a question I get every single day. Finally got a good answer for it!

How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a wood chuck could chuck wood

I was speaking with someone this week and was inspired to put this up on the Web. It's a prank I did for my then girlfriend in 2008. We had just seen the play As You Like It at the Free Shakespeare event in Boston Common. In the play, one of the jokes is that Orlando is so lovestruck that he wanders around the forest hanging up bad poetry.

So I made these signs and hung them along the route that my girlfriend would take to come visit me. See the Wheel Questions backstage blog. I guarantee it will make you laugh! :)

Are horoscopes true?!?!

(I often wonder...)

They're completely false!

The reason they seem true is they're so vague. They could apply to anyone, & wishful thinking does the rest. For example, if I told you that you'd lose sleep worrying about someone special, so what? We all do that, & if you happen not to, well, people tend to forget how horoscopes are wrong.

Will there ever be peace?

* <3 <3 <3 Yes! <3 <3 <3 <3 *

The world right now has the fewest armed conflicts & the fewest per capita deaths from armed conflict of all time, even including the cave men era.

Half the world is democracies, and they don't fight each other. Hang in there -- the other half will find peace by 2050.

I once lost 125 lbs. I have been very obese. There's no reason it should be a barrier to love, but it doesn't exactly help.

In 2008, I had a "regular asker" who signed her notes "Desperately Needs Decaf". It's her birthday. Happy birthday, Decaf! :)

How does a fat Guy stop eating ice cream and get a Hot Girl Like Megan fox or scarlett Johanson to date him?

Most people can't quit their addictions without help. You need to get over your embarassment & stubborness & reach out.

Stop buying unhealthy groceries.

Learn about nutrition & find healthy, good-tasting snack foods.

Weigh yourself every day & make a chart as a reality check.

Write your reasons for dieting on a card with a supermodel's photo & carry it always.

Why do I meet so many intolerant people in my life?

<3

Think of it this way. There are a certain number of intolerant people in the world. Just because you meet one doesn't actually increase the number or make the world a better place. You can't change people but you can ruin your own day by letting it get under your skin. Avoid situations where you have to deal with hateful people & hang in there. Social trends look good!

I'm looking for someone with a videocamera to take some shots of the Wheel. Please ask around for me. My email is johnny@wheelquestions.org

Will I find true love?

<3

Yes, but you have to be brave.

You make the first step in asking people out. Go to parties, go online, go to hobby clubs & just say hi to people in the mall.

The more you do it the less important each encounter & date will seem & that will help you get used to it & lessen your anxiety. Aim for one date a week. Sort out your life "baggage" so you can say "no" to the wrong people & stay single for the right!

Today I got the official go-ahead for a charity walk I'll be organizing, October 24, 2009. It will be called the Boston Monster March, a costume-themed walk, to benefit Camp Sunshine, a camp for kids with life-threatening illness and their families. The Boston Monster March replaces the "Boston Pumpkin Festival" from the last few years that the camp has done.

Will I ever get out of my lifelong rut?

HELP!

Asking for help is a good first step. Grab a friend & make a plan. The more you define it, the more you control it & the less afraid you'll be. Ask for help for the energy just to get started. Once you're changing your life for the better you'll gain the energy to finish the job.

You don't need all the energy to start!

I get this one at least once a day. Here's a completely new answer for it.

What is the meaning of life?

Death doesn't just come at the end.

You sprinkle it throughout your life, when you watch television, when you're high, and when you invest in people or projects that aren't good back to you.

And when you wait to chase your dream.

Someone stole all the blank cards and all the questions between 2pm Monday (yesterday) and 2pm Tuesday (today). Please resubmit your questions from then.

I've put a lock on the question drop boxes. Please email me if you see anything wrong with the Wheel, and go ahead and take down anything obscene or promotional by yourself. Thanks!

This is one of the most frequent questions I get. Finally I think I have a worthy answer.

why?

Sometimes there is no why.

Sometimes people make mistakes.

Sometimes trouble just happens.

But people are often generous, and happy accidents happen too.

Of course you fixate on problems, so you can fix them.

But look around you. Freedom, wealth, health, technology have never been greater. Look around, and smile.

Most of the questions I get are serious. Time for a break from that!

My best friend Rick and I rolled Wheel Questions two miles from Harvard Square, Cambridge to Davis Square, Somerville. It took over 2 hours, but less time than breaking it down into pieces and putting it back up! See the photos on the backstage blog.

What I might have said for today's card is, it's OK to keep loving someone. As long as you don't make bad choices about sticking around an unhealthy love, the pain will fade.

what will i do if i can't stop loving him? & please don't say love myself i've tried & it doesn't work. :(

You can't control love, but you can separate yourself physically from an unhealthy relationship, fill your life with friends & hobbies instead of pining, and you will get over it. Get a friend & use your head to overrule your heart's fear of being alone. You know you can't find healthy love while dating the wrong person. Be strong!

Will I ever find the courage to talk to girls?

Anon

Yes! The keys to social anxiety are becoming confident and happy in your own life, and practice. Do you have people or responsibilities that are cutting down your sense of self?

Back away from those & get new ones.

Then climb down from the "high stakes" of impressing women romantically & join some hobby clubs where you can practice.

The Wheel is in Davis Square now! Thanks for my best friend Rick for helping me roll it there, 2 miles on the streets of Cambridge and Somerville!

How do we as people truly connect to eachother? => That is how do we really penetrate the universes which are each individual's subjective perceptive experience?

*

Ask everyone you meet for their story. Compliment the store clerk, the woman at the bus stop, the taxi drive, or just people on the street who look interesting. Those who respond, talk with for a while. You might even say you're on a quest to collect people's hopes & fears. You could even set up a Wheel... hey, wait... ! :)

I like the cards with personality.

Should I be looking for a mechanical engineering job (my degree) or try to get a job related to the culinary arts (what I think I want to do some day)?

:) <-- This is me if that helps... though I'm cuter than this.

You have to follow your dream.

Maybe you could work in the equipment business for restaurants making huge freezers & vats!

Find some synergies that put you on a stepping stone to your dream job.

But pay the bills, too.

This is me! I'm Johnny!

So many of the cards I receive remind me of myself. This one, too.

I just got dumped by the girl of my dreams.

How do I recover?

your friend,

Leonard

Do something great.

Take all that grief & passion, the desire that you would change the world if only it would bring her back, and channel it into your job, creative outlet, or community.

Don't focus it inwards towards yourself.
