Your #1 romantic love cannot be long-distance. You can make it #2, or make it platonic, or you can move. Reality is tough, but you can't succeed by ignoring it.

(How) Do LONG-DISTANCE relationships work?

I'm sorry, but it's unworkable.

You need more than phone calls & monthly visits to maintain a loving, healthy relationship. There's too much tension. If you try, you may be able to find some synergies to stay together in one place. Or negotiate an open relationship or "take a break".
