October 2010 Archives

I went to the Jon Stewart Rally to Restore Sanity in Washington DC yesterday. Here's a card about irrational anger. Anger comes from frustration, but when you throw in irrationality, you get people who are angry at the wrong thing.

Why am I so mean to my friends?

You think you can get away with it, where the truth is that submissive people don't like it and self-confident people avoid you.

Make a list of things that make you happy and sad, and do something about it. That will make it easier not to lash out.

Although I don't drink, and never have, I've had problems with obesity my whole life. Here's a card asking for and receiving hope.

Are alcoholics always alcoholics?

Even when they've been dry for years?

No, I believe that we aren't fated to be slaves to our desires forever, and just like you can fall into addiction, you can fall out.

What's important is to realize how creative we are at self-deception. Don't make excuses for when you're doing something harmful.

It's the ultimate way to avoid addiction.

It's unfortunate that kids in school get drilled on facts and skills, without the connect to why they should care. Of course they rebel!

Why Do I have to go to school?

Because someday you'll be a movie star or an astronaut or a brave archaeologist like Indiana Jones, and you need school to get there. What's your dream?

A child told me once, "Adults are boring. All they do is talk!" The old and young disdain each other because they don't understand each other. Maybe they should mix more. Here's a card on that.

Does AGE REALLY MATTER?

Nothing really matters in friendship, romance, or family compared to, can you be consistently good to each other, & never fighting?

Live actively like you're young but don't have any time to waste either, no matter your age.

What causes our feelings? That's less important than being open to them. Of course there are gay people denying their feelings because of society, but there are plenty of straight and bisexual people who get confused too. Here's a card on that.

Why am I a Lesbian?

If you have fantasies about women, you're a lesbian. If you have fantasies about men, too, you're bisexual.

There's nothing to a gender preference except how you feel.

Kids write the most creative questions, but they also write the strangest. Here's one.

I Dont think Babys fly can they?

:|=

Babies can fly when they travel on airplanes!

I'm in this waiting period now for publishers to get back to me about the book. Keep your fingers crossed for me. Meanwhile, my best friend and I are going to a play and Canobie Lake Park's haunted attractions today.

I get asked "Why?" so often that I gave it its own category. Fortunately, it's such a vague question that it's an invitation to respond any way that I want to. Why why why? Ultimately, it's what's in front of you that matters, regardless of the reasons, which may not even exist. Here's a response I wrote that is almost a poem.

Why?

Life is full of accidents.

And people are, too.

But life is often wonderful.

And people are, too.

You can't control everything.

But you can spot most things coming.

Be open. Be prepared.

Make a plan & a backup.

Say "no" & avoid oncoming trouble.

Chase down opportunity.

Make your own luck!!

October is a great time to be an events journalist, because of all the creative off-beat activities that Halloween inspires people to run. Here's a little joy for everyone.

... This isn't a question.

Just spreading some love <3

we all need a little :)

Thanks!

I'm feeling down today & lonely and that means a lot to me.

If you'd like to write me through the website & volunteer to help, I'd like that too.

Who Answers Your Questions?

I have friends whose advice I can ask, but mainly I rely on myself. If I can write it down, then usually I can understand it or know what research to do to find the answer. For very abstract questions, I make them concrete by asking, so what's the impact of this on my happiness in the real world?

What am I waiting for?

Why am I always buying time?

You're afraid to act.

Life seems so big & scary.

But fear is always fear of the unknown, something you can reduce.

Get a friend & list out all your goals. Make a plan. Making healthy choices will add energy to your life.

You only need enough energy to start.

Choose the easiest part of your plan & go!

I really don't know what to do with cards that have vulgarity. I know it puts some people off and they'd prefer something lighter. But it's also life. This one speaks to the frustration of being stuck. I have been there. Swearing is something lighter when you feel like that. Here's the short version of what got me out of a rut several years ago.

How do I change my fucked up life. I am so pised of!

Fuck this!

=P

Invite a friend over & get a pad of paper & make a list of everything that makes you happy for real, everything that makes you happy but not really, and everything that makes you sad.

Make a plan & work on it! Make sure to include backing away from the habits & people who drain you. You really can do it!
