Today, fewer people (as a percentage of the population) die in war than in all of human history or pre-history. We can do better, but that's something to celebrate, not despair over. Here's a card on that.

This card (worry) is the flip side of yesterday's card (conflict). First, you accept that sometimes, there's nothing you can do. That helps you accept that you probably can do something... but don't shoot for the moon. Use the traction you have and don't overdo it being pushy or feeling guilty.

You start by using your head to outvote your heart. Don't jump ahead to posing solutions to your mom. Start by empathizing & letting her know you support & respect her. People (parents, kids, anyone) don't take advice otherwise. Then focus on getting her to acknowledge the problem. Have her make a list of problems in her life & whether she's happy. Being in a family is pretty random and intense, like having an arranged marriage, except in an arranged marriage at least there's somebody (even if it's not you) trying to make a good match! Here's a card about that. And rocks. :)

The most important thing about big decisions is thinking clearly. If your feelings ("How do I feel?") and the affects ("How does this affect me? Does it matter?") are out of synch, work to resolve that before making a big change. They can't both be right. Here's a card on that.

In the future we'll learn that anger is a disease related to depression and there will be a cure for this medical bias. For right now -- like people who gain weight easily -- you just have to deal with it. The first step is realizing that you can deal with it.

Dwelling on your anger focuses it. "Venting" is a myth. When you're angry, think, "How much would I pay that this had never happened? $5,000? $50? $5?" How mad can you be over a $5 problem? Think, "Look, there's going to be a terrible period where I'm miserable & act out & ruin my day & the day of those around me, & then I'll accept it. Taking new photographs has really demonstrated how the cards get worn by being hung outdoors in the New England weather. Here's an example of before and after. The cards are perfectly rectangular but the position of the camera makes them look lopsided.

It's irrelevant. You set your own expectations, based on your dream & your plan to get there. Grab a friend and figure it out.
